Meditation: The skill I’m trying to master

One thing I’ve realized I’m getting really good at is meditation. It can be argued that meditation is one of the most important skills a person can have. I’ve started to enjoy meditating, being with my raw self, and not being afraid to see whatever comes up. Not being afraid of being afraid within myself. When you look inward, you see all the parts of you — some pleasant, some not — but everything is a part of you. The bliss I’ve glimpsed from being with myself is just amazing. I can’t emphasize enough how beneficial it is to take at least five minutes out of your day for meditation. It can be the best thing you do. Of course, it may not be easy, but it’s worth the effort.

Naval Ravikant once said, “If meditation was easy, you wouldn’t do anything else.” Meditation doesn’t mean sitting in one place and doing nothing else once you start loving it. It’s about incorporating it into your life as a tool for living with awareness. When you sit for ten minutes with yourself, you’re practicing being aware.

I love meditation, but I don’t want to go to the jungles or the Himalayas and meditate forever. Sometimes, it’s important to take a break from everything and connect with yourself. My philosophy is a blend of the teachings of Lord Buddha and Lord Krishna. I can’t live in the jungles forever, nor can I keep fighting in the metaphorical battle of the social world forever.

When I’m in the world, socializing and working, I follow Lord Krishna’s school of thought. When I’m alone, I aspire to be like Buddha. However, there’s a convergence between the two. You can close your eyes anywhere — in the jungle, at home, in the office, or even on the battlefield — and be with yourself. You are always within you.

Similarly, no matter where you are, your duty is to do justice to the work you’re doing, which Krishna calls following Dharma. Everything is a battle in itself. Meditation is a battle in itself.

Buddha battles in the mind. Krishna meditates on the battlefield. It’s beautiful, isn’t it?

This is the way I want to live: being totally honest in whatever I’m doing, whatever the battlefield may be, and being totally honest with myself, fully aware within my mind, whatever the jungle may be.
